From Team Lead, Mr. Larry Behar, Our marine mammal advisor, Steve McCulloch, together with Senator Ron Silver are ardently working with Miami-Dade County officials on securing a 3–5-acre parcel of land on the 38-acre parcel of land that makes up the Miami Seaquarium (MSQ) on Key Biscayne. It is here we hope to establish a marine wildlife rescue center and teaching hospital. If called upon, Steve and his team of animal care and welfare specialists have offered to assist and provide emergency care for animals currently housed at the MSQ should the current owner needs help or are unable to correct deficiencies as determined by the USDA/APHIS inspectors. Our group is also investigating how to fund efforts to establish a marine mammal triage center in the Florida Keys and a longer-term care center for manatees and dolphins in SE Florida. Presently, Sea World in Orlando is the only facility that can accept manatees and cetaceans… and the 8-hrs drive time to transport a sick or injured marine mammals from the Keys to Orlando is no longer feasible. Both the Miami Seaquarium and Keys facilities in Islamorada are strategically located, but in desperate need of funding. Presently, there are no long-term care facilities for either manatees or dolphins on the entire eastern seaboard of the US... and so there is a great need and an incredible opportunity to advance our science and provide teaching opportunities for the next generation of marine wildlife specialists. Since the future use of the MSQ property is in question, we are still looking for a good 3–5-acre location in Broward County and are speaking with two viable candidates. With regret, the most obvious one which is the oceanographic center at NSU is now being eliminated as an option, notwithstanding the support of its founder Dr. Guy Harvey. The NSU administration still does not realize the benefit of having a rescue center and teaching hospital being co-located on their property. Our 20-member committee are all supportive and engaged in all our efforts. This is a moving story, and therefore we will keep you apprised as developments begin to cement. Thank you.
